SOP Review Help

Hello all!

 

I am in the process of applying to MBA programs and have drafted a SOP.  However, it has been sometime since I have written one so I am hoping to tap into the wealth of knowledge here and gain some insight as to how I can polish this thing up.  Below is a Copied and Pasted text from my SOP:

Statement of Purpose

I intend to become an effective project manager in the heavy construction industry.  While my strong technical background will serve me well, I hold that the pursuit of a Master’s Degree in Business Administration will prove fundamental in this endeavor.  After 5 years of work experience in the design field and handling technical details of design and construction of large-scale infrastructure projects, I sense a need to further develop my managerial skillset.  I hope to become an integral part of a team which can direct the course of infrastructure development in our country.  New program delivery methods, such as Design-Build, are becoming more prevalent in the industry which necessitates a need for understanding and innovating program delivery approaches.

 

 

My desire to become involved in the construction industry started in high school where my coursework in sciences and mathematics started to become more advanced.  I have a propensity for detail oriented work and problem solving, skills that fall in line with much of the work done in these core classes.  I gain satisfaction from interacting with the multiple disciplines involved in the construction industry; disciplines which must work together for a successful outcome.

 

During my Undergraduate studies, I focused my work in technical fields including advanced mathematics, physics, and other material directly related to structural engineering. While finishing my Undergraduate degree, I took on the challenge of starting my Graduate degree early which allowed me to fast-track completion of my Master of Science degree, finishing a full semester ahead of schedule and proving to myself that I am capable of handling large, complex workloads. 

 

 

The core of my professional work is based on bridge and transportation related structural design.  I have worked on 9 “Mega” (net fee greater than $5 million) Design-Build projects on accelerated schedules, based in as many locations around the country.  Currently my role has developed into leading younger engineers and delegating and overseeing tasks required to reach project milestones. 

Since moving to Orlando, I have had a desire to see the area improve.  I am routinely involved in volunteer community service efforts that serve the needs of those in our community.  These projects have ranged from painting houses, to picking fruit for the hungry, to serving at pet rescue and adoption facilities in Seminole and Orange Counties.

 

I am seeking enrollment at Rollins College based on the reputation and impact it’s product has on the socio-economic outlook of the area.  My professional career requires many hours and I feel the added work involved with the pursuit of this degree is a worthwhile challenge.  Most of all, I look forward to gaining knowledge that I can directly put into practice to improve our world for generations to come!
