sameertkd Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 (edited) Hello, I have low gpa i.e 2.94 in chemical engineering undergraduate program from India (Pune University). And last two years GPA is 3.03 (as some universities require gpa of last 2yrs like Missouri state). Currently preparing for GRE and looking for Petroleum engineering masters program. I have 1 yr work experience in equipment designing for oil refineries and other chemical industries. So is there any chance of getting into Petroleum engineering masters program if I get good LORs, SOP and high GRE score(320+)?(funding not expected) Also, as my background is from ChemE, I need to take basic courses in PetE. So is it possible to get conditional or provisional admission considering my backround mentioned above and maintain their require GPA to get full admission. Chemical and petroleum engineering programs have only 30% same syllabus, so do they evaluate all my subject grades or common one? I am looking for these universities- University of Alaska, Fairbanks University of Houston, Texas University of Kansas. New mexico tech. Missouri state university. Louisiana state University usc I am not expecting top uni like A&M, Austin, Uni of Louisiana, Colorado school of mines. But like to know about chances of getting into them. TexasGuy Posted November 13, 2013 Posted November 13, 2013 there is a LOT of overlap between PetE and ChemE as far as principles. So you're more than prepared. I'm sure you'll just have to take a few prereqs your first semester GPA's from indian schools dont translate well into the 4.0 system because you guys have a harsher grading system. Admissions folks are aware of this so dont worry too much. You do have a 3.0 for the last 2 years of your degree I definitely think you should apply to A&M. It is not as difficult to get in as you think. Especially if you are applying to masters. I think a 3.0 plus a 320+ GRE score will give you a solid chance at A&M. But definitely make sure you do well on the GRE..like a 160+ on the math section.

GPA evaluation was done by WES. are they good at it? because We dont have grading system. Secondly, comparing my academics with classmates, my rank will be in the range of 30-40 from 79 students class strength so should i stand a chance?
TexasGuy Posted November 14, 2013 Posted November 14, 2013 you really never know with admissions. As long as you meet the minimum GPA requirement, you stand a chance, So f**k WES lol, honestly. Just apply to schools you want to go to and dont listen to peoples opinions about your grades. Just kill the GRE ,write a really good SOP and apply.
sameertkd Posted December 31, 2013 Author Posted December 31, 2013 (edited) do i stand a chance to apply for spring 2015? What sem is good to apply in my condition? spring or fall? I have heard that there is less competion for spring admission. But I will need to take some prereq courses, so will they accept me? Edited December 31, 2013 by sameertkd
