Deliberate
(1) Given my stats below, would it be a good idea for me to last minute retake the GRE? (2) In case relevant to (1), I'm applying to top 20 programs and have a very technical writing sample. GRE Score: Verbal:164 Math: 163 Writing: 5.0 Other Stats: Undergrad: HYP GPA: 3.56 Philosophy Major GPA: 3.74 Masters GPA: 3.93/4.00 (the master's degree is in mathematics)
MattDest
What is "HYP"? I wouldn't bother retaking it, those are pretty great scores. Also, it's probably too late to retake anyway - right?
Deliberate
Apps are due on January 1st and you can take the GRE at computer test centers up till that date, so I don't think it's too late. Looking at gradcafe stats, it seems like most candidates accepted into top 20 programs have near perfect verbal scores. I'm fairly confident I can get my verbal score higher. Are you sure it's not worth it, especially given my low undergrad GPA? HYP stands for "Harvard Yale Princeton".
ἠφανισμένος
GRE scores aren't sent immediately. The GRE website says it takes 10-15 days after the test day for scores to be reported. So testing on Jan. 1 for applications due the same day would certainly result in late scores, but that may not entail automatic rejection.
Deliberate
So would somebody with a GRE score of 164 not be (plausibly) precluded even from top 10 schools? (And Philhopeful, I sent you a PM.)

(And Philhopeful, I sent you a PM.) Not on the basis of GRE score anyways, though obviously a poor writing sample or recommendations would preclude you. wandajune
The GRE score is probably one of the least important parts of the application. As is, your score is pretty solid. I wouldn't bother retaking it, especially if it means risking that your score will be sent late.
