moto092697 Posted December 8, 2013 Posted December 8, 2013 Just had my GRE exam. I am not a native student. When I was using pp2 for study, I usually get V143~145 and Q 170. I really do not want to retake but if I study the verbal over the winter I probably would be able to get ~V150. My first question does anyone know if they will ignore applications with low Verbal like this. I do not see they list any lowest requirement on GRE but I think they may set a cut-off. My second question is would anyone help me evaluate my chance of getting addmited with that 141+169 GRE. I am applying three programs in Upenn. Chemical Engineering MS, Nano MS, statistics MS in GSE, no financial aid needed. Also applying for other schools but really want to get into Upenn since my fiancee currently studying in their EE department. My undergraduate is Chemical Engineering in University of Delaware, with minor in Chemistry, Math, Econ, Statistics. Overall GPA 3.42~3.45 depends on this semester's grades. My GPA is screwed by a F for Thermal in my sophomore year due to missed final.. Retook it the following year get A. But the F is on my transcript. Research experience: 3 years in two labs, but no paper published Intership: worked in a european chemical engineering firm in Beijing for two summers, can get solid recomandation from my boss. I contributed to a development of a project and got my name on the patent, which is still pending for approval. Please help me make a decision weather I need to retake GRE or not.. I really want to focus on preparing application materials other than memorizing vocabs in the winter. Also I'd really appreciate if you have any advise on how can I get better chance of getting into upenn.
TexasGuy Posted December 8, 2013 Posted December 8, 2013 is your junior and senior year GPAs high?....if the F was in your sophomore year, then on your application (maybe on resume) you can include the GPA of only your junior and senior years..and in your SOP state why there is an F on your transcript and how you got an A when you retook the class (basically tell them the same thing you told us) that must be really frustrating for you but nothing you can do now... im assuming you're a permanent resident since you haven't mentioned the TOEFL? In that case don't retake it. Your qaunt score more than makes up for the verbal

I can have my TOEFL requirement waved for most scholls because I received my undergraduate education in the U.S. Do you really think the Quant will make up for verbal? My verbal is at 12% I think.. Anyone had experience or heared anyone got in with verbal this low? If I have to study over the winter I have to give up a chance working in lab for a paper or an internship. Also I have three person who is willing to write LOR for me. My boss at intern(from Netherlands works in China, co-inventor of the patent we developed), my acedemic advisor(over 30 maybe 40 years of teaching, retired and unfortunately having terminal cancer but still willing to help me), and research advisor(young and works for Dupont). Upenn only requires two, which two should I choose? My boss in China would definately write the best one, he also says he can give me job offer providing tuition if that helps me applying for M.S. degree. Anyone know if a job offer would help?
TexasGuy Posted December 9, 2013 Posted December 9, 2013 (edited) I mean... it would be excruciating to retake for a section that doesnt matter that much. I say call the schools you're applying to and ask if it is necessary. I dont think it is necessary..but ask them You can state in your SOP that you are a good writer (which you are). As long as you're a good writer i doubt they'll care about how you do on a ridiculous reading comprehension test that has nothing to do with chemE can you submit all three recs? or do you have to submit 2?
