airforceone Posted December 26, 2013 Posted December 26, 2013 Hello all, New to this forum, just wanting some suggestions. I am currently a NCO in the Air Force and have a degree. I am very interested in becoming a social worker for the Air Force. I have shopped around and found a few online MSW programs. Texas State is one whom offers everything online. Locally the University of Missouri also offers online/in seat hybrid courses. Because I am so busy with my current job, going to class in seat is really not a option for me. SO, does anyone have suggestions of good programs that can be obtianed online? What is the quickest one could obtain this degree? I have seen some between 2-3 years. Addtionally, as long as the program is accredited, one would have a entry level state license once completed correct? Thanks in advance!
MJL34 Posted December 26, 2013 Posted December 26, 2013 Each state has different rules regarding licensure (and specific licenses). In most cases, an MSW program accredited by the CSWE will provide the appropriate classwork and internships required; however, at a minimum you would likley have to pass an additional exam(s) with the state regulatory board and depending on what license, there would be a minimum number of required post-degree supervised hours. You should be able to find your specific state's requirements online. Also, keep in mind that even the online programs typically require a fieldwork component of 2-3 days a week over two years. So, you might be surprised by the time commitment required. I think rather than solely looking at "online" programs, you might want to focus on "part-time" programs that cater to students trying to maintain other jobs. Just my two cents.
TLC Posted December 26, 2013 Posted December 26, 2013 AirForceOne, I was active duty when I began looking at MSW programs as well.As the PP stated, it may behoove you to look at part-time programs, as online programs require a field practicum. Also, keep in mind the amount of time left at your current duty station, deployment possibility, etc. The navy has a program that would allow you to leave AD to pursue a degree then return to AD as enlisted, does the AF?. There are also officer programs. I understand that you may know about all of this. PM me of you have any specific questions regarding any of it. I'm more than happy to help.
