nicoleann Posted January 5, 2014 Posted January 5, 2014 Hey guys, I'm sort of new to this, but I'm looking for some advice. I have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 (yeah I know, it's really not good, I went through tough things in undergrad), I'm looking for high-acceptance rate graduate schools with not so bad tuition costs. I live in Staten Island, NY, but I'm not exactly opposed to leaving NY and going somewhere along the East Coast. Would anyone have any ideas about some schools? Thanks!
lola9900 Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 From what I can tell, there are a lot of Cal State schools that have 2.8 GPA minimums posted on their websites. Although you may pay out-of-state tuition the first year, you may be able to establish CA residency the second year. It seems that Long Island University has a 2.8 GPA minimum. Savannah State University (also only requires a 3.0 on the GRE writing portion). Millersville University in PA only requires a 2.8 GPA. Bridgewater State University in MA only requires a 2.8. I'm not sure what the tuition rates are at these schools. But with a little research, you may be able to find the school for you. I might contact someone at the school(s) you are interested in and discuss your specific circumstances with them to see how competitive you would be, and to ask whether they might suggest taking additional coursework, etc. to improve your chances.
Iamasocialworker Posted January 7, 2014 Posted January 7, 2014 Hey, I have a friend who is a Social Work T.A at Columbia University and she's always telling me that I should not worry about the GPA. if you really want to get into a school you can always convince the admission commission that you are a great fit! Show them that you really want this school and that you are a devoted student. Academic people are always trying to promote the profession and they are trying to get more and more people into the profession. So my point is that don't be afraid of your GPA and submit an application to all the upscale schools. Don't forget you can always find a way to finance your Master! (loan, scholarship, in campus work etc) You can take a look to the following resources: http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-health-schools/social-work-rankings http://www.gradschools.com/search-programs/social-work-msw http://www.nyssswa.org/schools.shtml Good luck !
