Stat Assistant Professor Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 I had requested to have my application to UConn withdrawn, but I got an acceptance there today. Waitlisted for financial support. Wll decline this offer.
statisticsfall2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 Just out of curiosity: has anyone else accepted an offer yet or plan to in the next few weeks? What other offices did/will you decline, if so? Hello, I'm about 90% sure I'm going to accept my Carnegie Mellon offer. i just have one more visit this weekend to UCSB, then I'll probably decide last week. The only place where I would open up a lot is from NC State's waitlist, and wherever I stand with Columbia and UCLA http://www.areavibes.com/cost-of-living-calculator/pittsburgh,+pa-vs-seattle,+wa/ Here's my COL calculator comparison. Looks like I won't be taking a huge hit financially even though the stipend is less than my full time job.
ParanoidAndroid Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 Looks like UNC is doing more PhD admits for the STOR program. Best of luck to those that applied!
CarpeDiem Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 to "statisticsfall2014" hi, did you receive a decision letter(email) from UCSB?? If so, did you applied for the applied probability and statistics PhD program?? Since I have not received any messages from the committee, I am curious about it!!

Hey, Yes, I received an official letter from that program. I think if you haven't heard anything yet, you will still have a chance. I'd imagine you will here more next week after the open house when people start accepting/declining offers.
CarpeDiem Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 Thanks for the notice. I hope to get an admission from the program, and also good luck to you for your remaining application results.
statisticsfall2014 Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 Thanks, yeah I think it would be awesome to live in Santa Barbara, probably in the top 5 nicest places to live in the world.
qqyyzz Posted March 13, 2014 Posted March 13, 2014 Hi Everyone, I finally found out that I am waitlisted from UCLA. I know this is a lot to ask because people like to consider as many options as possible but if you guys have other offers and don't think you'll be going to UCLA please decline. I'm really worried as I don't have any offers yet. Thanks
Stat Assistant Professor Posted March 14, 2014 Posted March 14, 2014 (edited) To anyone who is waiting to hear from UNC-Chapel Hill, I e-mailed the department, and this is what he said: "The admissions committee has made first round admissions offers and notified those students. Based on the offer response and the departmental budget for Fall 2014, they may offer a couple more Ph.D. students admission. Your application is complete and will remain eligible for review if we are able to make any additional offers." So it sounds like UNC won't reject anyone officially, but that they will possibly accept more people, based on how many accept their first-round offers (I assume those who are ranked the highest ranked below the list of those who were accepted). If anyone has an offer from UNC but is not planning to attend, I'm sure some people would be very grateful if you were to decline very soon. Edited March 14, 2014 by Applied Math to Stat
statistics2014phd Posted March 15, 2014 Posted March 15, 2014 (edited) Hello, Everyone, I have got offers from UC Davis and Ohio State University. If my plan is to become a professor, which one do you think it is a better choice? Both programs provide me with full funding. I would really appreciate any advice. Congrats! I think they are similarly ranked in both USNWR and NRC. Have you checked out the placement on their sites? I think both would give you an equally good shoot at getting an academic position... In this case, your success at getting one would be more dependent on who your adviser is and who their connections are (as well as what your research is on, how many publications you have when you go on the market, etc.), rather than the name of the school. Look at the job placements for both: http://www.stat.ucdavis.edu/people/alumni-info and https://www.stat.osu.edu/people/alumni I think from the looks of it OSU has better academic placements.

Thanks for your advice. According to the two links, why I feel that UC Davis is better in the sense of academic placements? It seems some PhD graduates became AP in U Pittsburg and UCSB. Thanks a lot for your prompt response. Right now I am leaning towards UC Davis. I feel UC Davis is younger and more dynamic. USNWR, Davis leaped from 31 to 27 and NRC also ranks Davis higher. There are some pretty good professors in UC Davis while OSU is simply bigger (maybe more options?). As to the climate and location, I feel that UC Davis is nice college town in North CAL (close to SF) and I will enjoy my life there more (I have to say I like Bay Area a lot). The only concern right now for me, I am not sure whether roughgly $1700 per month stipend (estimated) is enough for me to live comfortably in Davis. Do you have any idea? I do not want to ask for support from my parents. In comparison, OSU offers fellowship $2000 per month. But people say money should not be a primary factor when deciding where to go. I agree on that. What do you think? Edited March 16, 2014 by statistics2014phd

What do you think? They're both really good in terms of reputation, so you can't really lose on that measure whether you go to OSU or Davis (academia is a very reputation-based business, I don't think going to one would give you a huge advantage over the other). I think it is important to consider location and money. You're going to be living in this place for five years, so you may as well go with a place where you wouldn't hate living. Re: money. This will depend very much on your situation. Some people can rely on family support, but others can't as easily. If you think you would greatly prefer Davis and can survive on the stipend they're offering you, then I don't see why you shouldn't go there!
Stat Assistant Professor Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 This might be a long shot, but does anyone know what the yield rate is like for UC Berkeley, how many have been admitted so far, and what the target incoming class is? I saw someone posted what it was for UC Davis on page 40, so just curious if anyone can give any insight on this for Berkeley. I'm on an unofficial waiting list for Berkeley, but I'm curious how likely it is that they will send out more offers.
Vege Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 Does anyone get any news from Purdue Statistics Texas AM Statistics Maryland Applied Math UC Irvine Math Caltech Applied Math ?
CarpeDiem Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 to statisticsfall2014 (the quote function doesn't work on my computer... anyway) hey, would you let me know when is (or was) the open house of UCSB??? and...after the open house, could you let me know "how many people were there" and "any other information which is related to the admission"? thanks in advnace
statisticsfall2014 Posted March 16, 2014 Posted March 16, 2014 yeah sure, I'm here right now at the hotel. Tomorrow is the tour of the department and I can report from there
ManTastingTea Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 Has anyone heard about funding/assistantships for the biostats MS at UNC?
statisticsfall2014 Posted March 19, 2014 Posted March 19, 2014 Carpediem (and others waiting on ucsb)- there was about 10 students at the open house. It's hard to say how many will commit, I would guess about 1-5. Funding doesn't seem to be a guarantee, especially in your first couple years if your a non California resident. The group of kids who attended were all pretty cool, so if they all go I'd imagine it would be a pretty fun cohort. I would not lose hope of getting an offer, as the cards are going to start to fall here once visits wind down and people start accepting/rejecting offers.
