bsharpe269 Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 Is anyone from the northeast familiar with this school? I had never heard of it but there is an professor there doing some awesome research in my area. Id like to get some more info on the school's reputation. The other schools I am interest in include places like Umaryland, rutgers, rice, stanford, UCSF, etc. I would be looking at the BME program or biophysics... my research area is pretty interdisciplinary so I could apply to either department.
ss2player Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 RPI is very well respected; if it's a good research fit, apply! Just be aware Troy, NY is not the safest area of the country.

RPI has a really great reputation for engineering and the sciences, especially in the Northeast. My boyfriend is from Troy originally. Although it isnt the most ideal location, there is safe housing (you just have to be smart). They just built beautiful new College Suite buildings, one specifically designed for graduate students. You could also look into other suburban areas (East Greenbush, Averill Park, etc) which are more rural and would require a 10-15 minute drive into campus each day. A lot of my friends went to RPI for their undergrad. Apparently the school is much more focused on graduate students (which would work out well for you). I know the alumni network is very impressive, especially if you plan on settling somewhere in the Northeast. I'm going to bug my boyfriend to finally get on GradCafe since he knows a ton more than I do. But if you love the research I would definitely recommend taking a look at it!
bsharpe269 Posted February 5, 2014 Author Posted February 5, 2014 Thanks for the info guys! Is the area really THAT unsafe? I would be moving there with my husband and we would possibly we looking to start a family at some point. We would be willing to commute up to 30 min or so to live in a nice place.

It isn't that unsafe. It has good and bad areas like every city. I live in a rural area about 20-25 minutes from RPI. There's a lot of suburbs too if you're willing to commute.
threading_the_neidl Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 As a west coaster, I also knew RPI had a good reputation, so it's safe to say that it will be a well recognized degree most anywhere.
