HippoPirate Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 autismadvocate, have you read Loud Hands, Autistic People Speaking? I highly, highly recommend it to anyone and everyone (as the neurodiversity-embracing mom of an awesome 8-year-old autie).
Ali_B Posted March 29, 2014 Posted March 29, 2014 I chose to read The Man Who Mistook His Wife by Oliver Sacks for a speech class I took, and it was pretty good. It is a bunch of interesting clinical short stories. Also, unrelated, but I've been reading Orange is the New Black by Piper Kerman to pass the time and it is very interesting. Haven't watched the show before, but I'm intrigued!

selbstverteidigung Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 Okay, so I have a had a lot of time to sit and stress about applications and school and moving and I realized that I am putting too much time into the thoughts of grad school. I needed a break. So, I have redirected my time that I spend worrying into something more pleasurable and semi-productive: reading and, my personal guilty pleasure, video games. Here is a list of books that I have read, currently reading, about to start reading: Divergent (totally know this isn't "speechie" related - #guiltypleasure - can't wait for the movies)My Stroke of Insight - Jill Bolte TaylorThe Diving Bell and The Butterfly - Jean-Dominique BaubyThe Giver (again not speechie but I loved this book in high school and wanted to re-read) League of Denial - Mark Fainaru-Wada and Steve Fainaru (OMG if you are anything like me then you have a love/hate relationship with football, hockey, XSports, really any contact sport then this is must read - the book highlights how the NFL has failed to represent their players and give them the best chances of remaining healthy) What about you guys? Know any good books pertaining to Speech Pathology that you think would be a good read? Or any books really? I personally found Divergent author Veronica Roth's worldview absolutely disgusting. Think about it. I recommend "Delirium" by Lauren Oliver. Wonderful books about daring to love and shoot for the stars.
selbstverteidigung Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 I recommend reading and watching "Temple Grandin." What an incredible woman.
chitchat2016 Posted March 30, 2014 Posted March 30, 2014 I also recommend Schuyler's Monster: A Father's Journey with His Wordless Daughter. I had to read it for my clinical methods class and really enjoyed it. I think it has a slow start but overall reading about the parent's perspective was wonderful.
tchris Posted April 8, 2014 Posted April 8, 2014 Here's an interesting BBC Documentary about autism https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5R6Y0lAkbSQ&feature=share
