mls1126 Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 Anyone have any insights on NC State's msw program? I've applied to both UNC and NC State. Tons of info out there on unc, but not as much on ncsu. I know that both schools are top schools in NC, I'm just wanting a little more info on the MSW program. Obviously UNC is a #5 school, but I'm sure with that is a much more challenging program (not that its a bad thing). I'm interested in medical social work, more specifically crisis work (substance abuse, emergency room, hospital setting), treatment planning and discharge planning. Any pros or cons would be great!
MJL34 Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 I'm much more familiar with UNC's program than NC State's -- but one observation that comes to mind when you have one "highly-ranked" program in the same geographical area as another (similar to how Berkeley dominates the Bay Area) is that they have greater access to the top fieldwork placements. I would suggest investigating which schools place students for internships in the practice areas that are of most interest to you. In your case, it sounds like a hospital setting is important -- so find out who gets placements where. Hope that helps.
mls1126 Posted February 6, 2014 Author Posted February 6, 2014 Thanks for the suggestion! It looks like unc picks out your first year field placement and state you are able to pick out your own. I definitely want to be in a hospital setting, luckily in Raleigh there 3-4 big hospitals if not more and chapel hill theres 2-3 big hospitals. I'm not sure which would be a better situation between the two schools yet.
