riverscuomo Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 Hey, I stumbled across this website called GradPay (http://gradpay.herokuapp.com/) that has a database of stipend information for grad students across different schools and programs. I had been looking for something like this, and figured others might want to take a look as well (even though some of the information is surely also on this forum). There are only 11 entries for sociology so far - maybe a few of the current sociology students on this forum could fill out their information to make the dataset a little richer? hgp and gretagarbo 2
gretagarbo Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 I was just looking for something like this! Thanks a lot for sharing. Recent admits, any info on the funding offers will be much appreciated.
amlobo Posted February 6, 2014 Posted February 6, 2014 I think the thing with that website is they need so many from each program before posting it. I remember I filled it out months ago, and my program isn't on there.

In general, at least in the schools I'm familiar with, there's a standard, university-wide package for all humanities and most social science students (not economics). Some may offer some variations on that (at my school, there's not really that much wiggle room in packages, but I've heard some places are willing and able to offer a few minor perks), and maybe some specific projects and institutes will top up their students) and at some places there are a few high status, university-wide, merit-based package which are more generous ("Presidential Scholar" or something) but, in general, my experience is that packages for social science and humanities students are pretty consistent across the university.

I only have a 9 month offer but the graduate school has a system where they pay half of my salary if a professor (in my field) were to give me an RA-ship over the summer so voila 12 month offer if I do well enough in school. (a whole different story there). The possibility of a no-pay summer, however, is rather stressful as it is somewhat hard to save up during the school year and most of your savings go towards conference travels and what (reimbursed sure but only after the conference has been).

I always assumed 9 month offer can be better than a 12 month, if the amount paid is the same or very close. I mean, it is possible to get extra funding for the summer with a 9 month package, while you have to sustain with what is already offered to you in the case of 12 month package. This is what I assumed though. Maybe someone can illuminate important differences between 9 month and 12 month funding. asq 1
