UG Essay

I'm currently in an Into PS Class where I am struggling(Mainly due to the confusing PS terminology/terms). I am supposed to write an essay on  what modernization theory contributes to the dialogue on why certain countries become democratic. The professor also wants us to detail if this theory of transition to democracy is more viable than the social, economic and colonial orgins of democracy? He also wants us to construct an argument that addresses the strengths or weakness of each of these three theories relative to modernization theory, and come to a conclusion—Is modernization theory of greater value than the three theories discussed in class? How and why? I am lost as can be so any help would be greatly appreciated
