Metaellipses
Do we actually know that Rutgers has had a collapse in the applicant pool? The Rutgers delay might have been due to the fact that there was a two-step process involved in applying that required a 24-hour turnaround time to submit a writing sample. This. As far as I know (from talking to administrative staff around that time) the deadline extension was due to fact that a lot of people were having trouble with the two step process, and not because of a shrinking applicant pool. Yeah, I found it confusing and strange myself. Once I got past it though I didn't give any thought to how it might be slowing other people up... I attributed it to my own nerves about the whole process.

But could the two-step process have caused a shrinking of the applicant pool?
echo449
I dunno, but I'd assume not. Rutgers is a department with a good rep and great placement, as well as a relatively cheap application fee. Those things, I think, would trump the light hassle of the process.

Additionally, I'm wondering if any of you had this experience: I made a spreadsheet of all the places I applied to in September 2014, charting things like deadlines, app fees, etc. Back when I did that, I had seen and marked Rutgers' deadline as 5 January. When at the start of December I was finishing all of my applications, I saw that it had changed to the standard 15 December. Fortunately it proved no problem in terms of getting my app in on time, but I'm wondering if the switch in date had anything to do with the extension.
