Int.grad Posted February 22, 2014 Posted February 22, 2014 Hello everybody I am an international student studying PhD in the US (full time). I study computer sciences. The university where I study doesn't offer summer internships. Actually I have zero experience in the procedures needed to join a summer research internship. Do I need to submit an application? Or do I need to contact faculty directly? How do I know which schools are offering such opportunities? Also, is it hard (competitive) to get into one? I know that professors prefer to work with their students. Please if anyone has any piece of information or experience regarding this, share it. It would also be really helpful to list some schools. Thank you.
Int.grad Posted February 28, 2014 Author Posted February 28, 2014 Hello Am I writting in the wrong section of the forum? Or such internships are not so common ? Please guys any one can at least give me directions to where to look??
bsharpe269 Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 I have heard of people directly contacting faculty who have similar intersts and asking about summer research positions. You would probably have to have valuable skills related to their research for them to consider hiring you to help for the summer. If you can find labs that do similar work to what you do for your phd so that you dont need tons of training before starting then you should contact the faculty member and ask whether they are looking for any help this summer. Even though your school does not does not offer summar internships are you appliated with a lab there? Often times, your PI may be able to fund you to work for the summer.
geographyrocks Posted March 2, 2014 Posted March 2, 2014 Ask you PI. It's an advantage to both you and him that you get research experience. Look up nearby Universities. The university I currently attend has graduate REU programs, I believe. Also, Google is your friend. https://www.nsf.gov/crssprgm/reu/
