namehere Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 IUB SPEA offers a top-ranked program in non-profit management, however it appears that they lack a lot of curriculum in the international sector and are not member a of APSIA. My professional plans are to work in international development and conflict management (I have 4 years work experience in both development and conflict management through the military) through non-government organizations, would attending SPEA hurt or help this (concern being present from the lack of international focus in the program)? Any other suggestions for schools? I have applied to UT-LBJ's MGPS/MBA, HKS MPP, and UW MPA. Any and all information is helpful, thanks ahead of time.
Gov2School Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 For what it's worth: I know several people who work for USAID who are IU grads and speak very highly of it as a program. It seems well respected as a place to build strong, practical skills. Harvard has more name cache, of course, but that's not necessarily a reason to discount a program that you think fits you well.
Etownenviro Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014 For what its worth I know what MSES/MPA grads do some international work mostly focusing in the environmental sector of course so they must have some connections to international organizations. Also I think they have a few exchanges where you can spend the summer working abroad or a semester abroad if that is of interest to you. http://www.indiana.edu/~spea/career_development/about_us/career_development/career_guides/international_development.shtml
namehere Posted March 3, 2014 Author Posted March 3, 2014 To both of you, thank you for responding. Certainly helps to add in any information, especially for those currently working in field, to the decision process and analysis. Digging into it further, I confirmed they also offer a certificate in Conflict Resolution (inclusive of legal and state dispute resolution), depending on fellowship offers from there and other schools I have been admitted, I most likely will be in Bloomington this fall. Thanks again for the info.
awex Posted March 10, 2014 Posted March 10, 2014 Has anyone heard about funding from SPEA? I saw on the results page that someone recently posted that they received some financial info, along with a stipend for a SPEA program. I was accepted back in November for Fall 2014 and their website says funding info won't go out until April? I had a phone call from them about 2 weeks ago to see if I had any questions and when I asked about aid, they said the same timeline. Just wondering if anyone else heard .... Thanks!!!
Etownenviro Posted March 12, 2014 Posted March 12, 2014 I received funding from SPEA in an email. They are giving my a percentage off every credit I take and then they are also providing an assistantship. I applied for an MPA/MSES so I don't know if the timeline is different but I got the email about a week ago. My guess would be since they are a public school they have less money to give out than a private university and may have to wait for some people to turn down their funding before offering it to other students. That is just a theory though, I'm by no means a financial aid expert.
