To add to Hannah's great guidelines, as a general rule, if you intend to find some place in Hyde Park, try to be within the region marked by 50th Street and the 60th Street. You can also look up apartments at Craiglist (open to all). We have a CVS close to Hyde Park Produce and Walgreen's close to Treasure Island, so these are indeed very convenient places. Also, you can take advantage of UChicago's awesome  shuttle service in addition to CTA buses, some of which are free (such as 171, 172) for UChicago students (you'll just need to show your UChicago ID).

I'll be starting as a Harris MPP student this fall!

About housing:

I attended uchicago as an undergraduate as well, and this time around I've decided to get a furnished studio/1 bdrm through campus housing.  As an undergrad, I've lived in the dorms (Max P), in MAC apartments, in independently owned apartments, and in a furnished studio (the Versailles on 53rd and Dorchester, which I actually loved).  Some off-campus buildings are managed well, but there are also some truly awful superintendents and management companies in Hyde Park, and I disagree with the idea that off-campus housing is categorically a better choice.  Some benefits of on-campus housing: 1) non-internet utilities are included; 2) living with other graduate students; 3) better prices for furnished apartments (buying furniture and moving furniture in Hyde Park in the summer is a complete nightmare.  IMO totally not worth it for those of us in a two year program).

Just my two cents.

Could you mention any particularly good or bad companies? I've been pointed towards MAC by my department's student affairs people.

Hey everyone, I'm actually leaving U Chicago this year (i.e. in a couple of months), as is my roommate, and we are looking for someone to take over our lease in July. It's a nice two-bedroom owned by MAC Properties, on Woodlawn and 54th. Location-wise, that is pretty much unbeatable - safe, near campus, and one to two blocks from coffee, groceries, the 55 bus line, and Jimmy's (the only real bar in Hyde Park). The rent is $1,044 total; the details would be worked out with MAC, but you'd take the last month of our lease (July) plus the period of your new lease, which you would negotiate with MAC. If you'd like to move in early, my roommate and I will be gone by mid-June, so we could probably work something out there.

Also... it's warm, which is important given polar vortexes and all.

PM me if you're interested, and I can answer any questions you might have.

For what it's worth, MAC properties is generally considered to be evil in Hyde Park.  The problem is that they own A TON of property so it's hard not to rent from them.  That said, it's worth it to try to find an independent landlord.
