j0rdan Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 I received an email from a prospective supervisor saying that they are very interested in my graduate application (assuming this is a good sign?). I provided him with several times thsi week, and next, that I am available to visit the lab. However it has now been over a day since I sent the email and still haven't received a reply. At what point should I send out a reminder email? Thanks!
Munashi Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 Did your prospective supervisor invite you to visit? Or were you just making them aware that you are available to visit if they'd like to meet you? If they did not invite you explicitly, they may not have anticipated you wanting to come in person immediately and without invitation. I would also note that "over a day" to respond to an email is not an unusual amount of time. When it came to POIs, I usually gave 1-2 weeks before sending another email. The last thing you want to do is bug them. They may just be trying to sort out their schedule to determine if and when they would be able to accommodate a visit from you (especially if they did not invite you to visit in their initial email).

Munashi Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 If they invited you out, that's a great sign! I would give at least 5-7 days before sending a brief email re-emphasizing that you'd very much like to visit and that you have upcoming availability and X, Y, and Z times. Don't be discouraged if it takes them some time to get back to you. Professors are an insanely busy breed, and they are likely just dealing with a few other things at the moment. Good luck!

Thanks again, that's incredibly helpful!
swajm Posted March 9, 2014 Posted March 9, 2014 Hey OMG I'm so glad I found this thread. I've kinda had the same problem myself. I was contacted by a potential supervisor way back in February..he wanted to schedule an interview over Skype (since I wasn't in the country). I gave him my Skype ID and he added me and everything but I still haven't had my interview. I've emailed him a couple of times but he's responded vaguely about when we'll actually talk...saying stuff like 'Oh contact me anytime next week'. I've messaged/called him on Skype and I sent another email two days ago but I haven't had a response yet. One of my uncle's a PhD and he knows what it's like so he's been telling me to ping him on Skype as often as I can, but it just doesn't seem right. I really don't know what to do! Has this professor forgotten about my application? Or is he just busy? Should I wait for him to schedule a proper interview or should I keep trying myself? It would be great if someone could help me out. I'm so sick of stressing out over this! Thanks:)
