Emailing professors for job opportunities in their labs

Have people tried this? Has anyone succeeded? 

 

EDIT: I'm asking this not as a graduate student or undergraduate.

I haven't asked for a job, but I have written for a volunteer position and gotten emails saying if I wanted a job. I think its okay if you email them asking for job opportunities.

If they are someone you're really interested in working with, it can't hurt.  You may get a lot of replies centered on "You're welcome to help out, but I can't pay you", but you never know.  Sometimes PIs need a hand and just haven't gotten around to posting job listing...
