SLP person Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 What do people know about Columbia University? I've heard great things about the program but does anyone know specifics? Is it significantly more challenging once you're admitted? Are the faculty helpful? Are students willing to work together or is it still a competitive atmosphere once you're in? I was wait listed here and am still trying to figure things out. I want to weigh the pros and cons of every program before choosing. Also, do they ever offer funding or scholarships because this school is extremely expensive. Any info is helpful! Thanks so much
Yancey Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 I was accepted. In my financial aid packet I was offered $6,000 in work study and the rest loans (around $50,000 a year and I'm not sure it included cost of living). I think they do give out a few scholarships, but to my knowledge (reading forums, looking at acceptance boards) they are not known for extremely generous funding (unless someone has first hand experience with this). Their website states close to full funding is incredibly unlikely. I think outside scholarships would help with tuition. Additionally, more funding (assistantships, etc) may be available in the second year. A classmate of mine was accepted and attended a few years back. She took out loans to pay for it. She did enjoy her experience and participated in the study abroad opportunities. She did her cfy in a skilled nursing facility and now works at a hospital.
