ASL

Hi everyone!

 

Earlier I posted about bilingual programs I'm interested in looking into. Does anyone here know ASL and is pursuing SLP? (Sorry if this question sounds dumb, I'm an out-of-field major) I'm starting to teach myself signs but I'm deciding whether I should take a course in sign language because I'm not sure if SLPs can also work in ASL (or bimodal children?).

I'm actually very interested in this too, but I have a feeling that if/when I learn ASL, it's going to be on my own and not through my graduate program.  Does anyone know of any good resources (online or Boston area) to get started?  I've been doing a bit of my own preliminary research, but any recommendations would be most appreciated!

I think ASL can be very beneficial for SLPs.  I used to work in a camp for children with special needs and we used signs all the time as another way of communicating.  I especially remember using these signs with campers who had autism.

ASL Is very beneficial for SLPs, especially in child clinics. You use them a lot. With Apraxia children, as well as those with special needs. Honestly, you can probably teach yourself. I had an old teacher give me some lessons and she recommended a few books. I'd buy one off amazon, they aren't too expensive and maybe find a friend that can do it with you. Learning the style and facial expressions is what you want someone else for. Emotion and facial expression/body language is so important in ASL. Sometimes you can find deaf churches, deaf communities and once you know a little about it, i'd go watch and see if you can interact and learn! ASL is incredible. Such a beautiful language.
