Fulbright Award

This is the official thread for anyone wishing to talk about the Fulbright award.

To open the discussion, does anyone know if engineers stand a good chance of getting the award? What is the major criteria for this ward? Do you need to be proficient in the language of the country you want to study at?

From what I understand, the answer is "it depends."

Some countries require that you be able to conduct research in the local language.

I am preparing a future application for Korea; I have been in touch with a potential hosting institution there, and they have told me that in the department for my particular area of interest, all the people that I would potentially be working with went to school in North America, so I would be able to conduct research without any trouble in English (although I have taken one year of Korean, and hope to have another year in before sending off my application). I think I would have to have a supplemental explanation sheet for this, though, and a letter from the institution saying that research in English will not be a problem.

But I would imagine that the more proficient you are in the local language, the better.

I am applying for a Fulbright in Korea too...but I am going for the Teaching Assistantship.
