Practicum at Federal Institution as F1 Visa Holder

Hi,

 

Does anyone know whether a student on an F1 visa is allowed to work at a federal prison? I know that employment requires US citizenship and so does a full-time internship but I can not find any information on part-time practica (unpaid, 20 hours, school sponsorship).

In my field, counseling psych, we can't. It's pretty common for (US) students to have part-time practicum positions at VA hospitals, and international students don't get to do that.
