Sriracha Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 Unfortunately, neither of them are funded (I got into the Plan B MS program at UMN). 1 year at Cornell would cost approximately the same as 2 years at Minnesota. I definitely want to go into industry after graduating. I know the location for Minnesota is great -- many medical device companies are housed there, and maybe I can establish some connections. However, I can't help but think the Cornell name would be useful in the future, and I like the idea of being an Ivy graduate. I'm pretty torn at this point. Advice/suggestions/any general help? Thank you! I really appreciate it.
kcyc Posted April 5, 2014 Posted April 5, 2014 (edited) Cornell if not too costly. Recruiters come to Cornell too, and u can look for jobs when you graduate. I thought for engineering Cornell is way higher ranked than minnesota Edited April 5, 2014 by kcyc
Sriracha Posted April 7, 2014 Author Posted April 7, 2014 Thanks for your input! What about the M.Eng vs MS factor? Will employers look down on the fact that M.Eng is an easier/shorter degree?
jeffleung1992 Posted April 8, 2014 Posted April 8, 2014 Thanks for your input! What about the M.Eng vs MS factor? Will employers look down on the fact that M.Eng is an easier/shorter degree? A lot of employers treat a masters degree as just that, a masters degree. They don't necessarily care (or honestly even know) about the difference between a MS and a M.Eng. I think they are just looking to see if you have the appropriate experience and coursework for the position that they are hiring you for. Also Cornell is a top ranked school; I don't think anyone will think you took the "easy" way out. Personally I would choose Cornell as it has a respected name and engineering program. Sometimes having a big name like that on a resume can make people look twice. Congrats and best wishes!
