missy elliot smith Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 Hi Everyone! I've only seen a thread for this in the Art forum (and an old one that that!), so I thought I'd start one up on the Art History side. Did anyone here apply this year? I applied to the curatorial program. Fingers crossed and best of luck. (If there's another forum someone else might know of where people have posted about this recently, I'd love to know!)
BagLady Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 I applied for the studio program for 2014. I wrote to them prior to applying to ask a few essential q's about the application as I'm sending it from OS. They say studio applicants should be notified by late April…it's like sending something to space though as i got no response. I have an MFA, an art practice and a writing practice. I tried to make my application as competitive as possible, would have loved some tips from past applicants! It's a really competitive program so I'm not holding much hope though : ) Has anyone heard anything yet?
siltsleeper Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 Hi there- I've also applied to the studio portion of ISP for 2014. Also not holding out much hope- anyone heard anything? I'm assuming emails have already been sent out.
missy elliot smith Posted April 25, 2014 Author Posted April 25, 2014 (edited) I haven't heard back at all either, so I'm just waiting for the rejection letter to come in the mail. Older threads indicate that those arrive by post in early May. (Here's where I'm gonna whine a bit.) It's so tough to know what they're looking for. I thought that this year I would have the right profile for the ISP. I know some people who've completed the program and they all thought I was a great candidate. I thought I was at least good enough for an interview. Sucks, but oh well. Edited April 25, 2014 by missy elliot smith
siltsleeper Posted April 25, 2014 Posted April 25, 2014 This is such a odd, but great program. I know a guy who participated in 2008 and he says the panel will NOT consider any work with blood or sexual content (what, the Whitney?) and that you almost always have to have a letter of recommendation from an alum of the program. I got in touch with the aforementioned guy, but he was already backing someone else this time around. That's all heresay, but hey. Still, good luck! It's possible they haven't sent out emails yet, I don't know
BagLady Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 I had a letter of support from a whitney program alum and the dean of my university…but it's based on your work too…haven't heard anything yet though. Anyone received an interview or rejection yet?
pastette Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 Does the Whitney Independent Study program offer funding, a scholarship or stipend? If it does, how much is it?
elmago Posted May 2, 2014 Posted May 2, 2014 I had an interview a few days ago... I had an interview too (last week) - studio program. They told me they were doing interviews this past week as well, but remained vague as to exactly when (and how) interviewees would find out whether or not they're accepted...keep us posted if you hear anything and I'll do the same!
elmago Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 For anyone who is following this, I was contacted today - got into the program! Proof that you don't necessarily need an 'insider' writing you letters...
smorkriz Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 elmago, congratulations! was it for critical, curatorial, or studio?
smorkriz Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 aha, elmago... i just realized that you are in the studio program. would you be so kind as to tell me how they notify you, by phone or e-mail?
elmago Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 thanks! I applied for the studio program. I was notified by email yesterday but they said they had tried to contact me by phone (it's been acting weird all week). I also heard a friend of a friend received a rejection letter on Tuesday - it seems odd that they would send these out before notifying people who got in, so I wonder if they had tried to call/left voicemails a few days ago... Anyway, good luck to those waiting to hear back!!! Maybe I'll be meeting some of you in September
