lkg Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 Hi All, I got interviewed for a PhD position on Mar 19th after a long wait, then got put on waitlist on Mar 25th. On Apr 8th, the admin-in-charge of the PhD program writes saying that funding is limited and encourages me to accept PhD offer without funding. Has anybody faced this situation before? What do you think are my chances of getting an admit with funding if I wait, or funding after joining if I accept the current offer? Any suggestions regarding the actions I can take now?
TheGirlWhoLived Posted April 10, 2014 Posted April 10, 2014 I personally wouldn't take an unfunded offer, but if you still want to go to that program, I would ask around. From what I've seen, some schools only can give out very little funding when accepting students but are very good about getting them funding once the program has started. You also don't want to be stuck taking out loans for the next 5 or so years. Ask other students in the program about their experience with funding. I'm sure you aren't the first person this has happened to in the department.
shelly_song Posted April 12, 2014 Posted April 12, 2014 Hi.,My situation is similar with you, except I did not have any interview yet. I have get the admission to the phd program, but I didn't get any fouding yet.The department told me that the RA/TA is still be selected by the professors and department. Some applicants told me that the fouding may be selected each year,so the one who paid for their first year has grant opportunity to get the RA/TA next year, which means tution waived and get paid each month. wish you good luck.
