francophilefroggyfriend Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Hello! I've been lurking here for a while, but now that my decision is made, I'd like to connect with my future classmates. Who else is going to Vanderbilt this fall? Just a little about myself: I'm coming to the MS-SLP from out of major. I studied French at UC Davis in my home state of California. I recently moved back to the States after working as an ESL teacher in France for a few years. Like many of you, I'm a musician, so if it's baroque, don't fix it. I chose Vanderbilt for its medical setting and for its voice specialty track, which I will be entering. Looking forward to hearing from you! Matthew
ladyinwaiting23 Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Hi Matthew, I'll be attending Vanderbilt University this Fall as well. I'm really excited for the program and to move to Nashville I'm from the Boston area and I'm also from out of major, although I have some pre-recs completed already. Looking forward to meeting you! You mentioned that you're a musician--what do you play?
francophilefroggyfriend Posted April 17, 2014 Author Posted April 17, 2014 Hi ladyinwaiting, good to hear from you! I very nearly accepted an offer at a Boston school because I was so taken with the city, but I think Vanderbilt's program is the better fit for me. I play the harpsichord and other keyboards and particularly love working with singers (one of the reasons for my interest in the voice track). What did you study in undergrad? Cheers, Matthew
ladyinwaiting23 Posted April 17, 2014 Posted April 17, 2014 Oh that's really cool. I wish I could say I had musical talents but, alas, I have none. If you like working with singers Nashville is definitely the way to go! And the voice tract is a lot of work from what I've heard but completely worth it. Did you get the chance to visit or tour the campus at all? I was a psychology major in undergrad and I specialized in human services. I have a really strong pediatric research background from my undergrad career and from the 2 years I took off from school. I'm excited to get back into it though!
francophilefroggyfriend Posted April 17, 2014 Author Posted April 17, 2014 Yeah, it sounds like most of the voice electives take place during breaks between terms, so it will keep me busy! I did get to visit the department a few weeks ago. I was very impressed with their one-on-one training model as well as the abundant resources available to SLP students. I also took the chance to scope out a number of neighborhoods in Nashville and get a feel for the city. Have you been yet? It sounds like you have a perfect background for the field! I'm sure getting back into the rhythm of school will go just fine for you. Cheers, Matthew
ladyinwaiting23 Posted April 18, 2014 Posted April 18, 2014 I did get a chance to visit about a month ago and I was absolutely blown away by the facilities. The clinical training is a huge factor as well considering that it's one on one and it's not a student clinic like most schools. Plus, the city is amazing, I had so much fun and I could definitely picture myself there. I found this adorable coffee shop on Edgehill and I can't wait to go back! Haha. So California to Nashville is going to be a big move for you--much farther than my trip anyway. Have you started looking around for places yet?
oliviamichele Posted April 19, 2014 Posted April 19, 2014 Hi there I'm also heading to Vanderbilt in the fall...coming from Indiana! When are y'all planning on moving to Nashville?
francophilefroggyfriend Posted April 20, 2014 Author Posted April 20, 2014 Hi! I haven't started looking for places yet. I have an 18-year-old car that (knock on wood!) has been pretty reliable. But, then, I've never driven it across the country either! I'm going to have a mechanic take a look at it before I decide if it's a wise idea. Being without a car would certainly limit where I could live in Nashville. In any case, I'm hoping to find a roommate who'd like to live near Hillsboro Village or Belmont. Otherwise, there are lots of apartments near the east side of campus. Right now I'm thinking mid-August. How about you two? Matthew
