declining an admit

i got into a program at cmu and i accepted it too. a couple days later, i got into the program i wanted at nyu. now i emailed the person at cmu telling him i want to pick the other, will this be problematic legally? urgent

No. If you paid a deposit, you probably won't get it back. It's not the ideal situation for them, but if it's a couple days after your acceptance, it shouldn't be too bad. Legally, there's no issue, I believe, you can drop out of any program at any time. The ethical/awkwardness value of declining after accepting isn't in the forefront since you already emailed CMU, and is discussed elsewhere on this forum.

Just curious: why NYU over CMU? Funding? Certain professor? Location?
