Francophile1 Posted May 16, 2014 Posted May 16, 2014 Hello, all Received another B in a graduate course. I am in MA level- 1st year, but the classes we take are with PhD students. Very disappointed and do not know what to do! I've been told not to get B's. Should I be concerned that they might ask me to leave the program altogether?? ALso extremely frustrated because, we are not exactly trained on how to write these research papers or what they want exactly. And from what I can tell the approach is much more severe and detailed than in undergrad. What do you all think?? P.S I worked extremely long on this research paper, and was hoping at least for a B+ ((
bsharpe269 Posted May 16, 2014 Posted May 16, 2014 I guess this depends on the program but I think most just have 3.0 - 3.3 gpa requirements. Ive never heard of anyone getting kicked out of a program for a single B. In my program actually, I think I may be one of only a couple people with all As (ive been a bit over the top with my grades because i am trying to make up for a low undergrad gpa before applying to phd programs). I would read the graduate school handbook if you have one or ask your advisor. Ive never heard of a program that strict before though.
Guest Gnome Chomsky Posted May 16, 2014 Posted May 16, 2014 I think programs vary. At my undergrad university, a B- was failing for the grad students. I'd say that's about normal. But a B probably isn't good. One here or there is probably okay but don't make it a habit.
Francophile1 Posted May 16, 2014 Author Posted May 16, 2014 We don't have -, just regular grades or +
biisis Posted May 16, 2014 Posted May 16, 2014 Sounds like your professor thought that your paper didn't meet expectations. The best thing to do is to go over their feedback and make an appointment to meet with them. Use this opportunity to learn more about the standards and resources for graduate research in your program. You may want to pursue additional writing and research seminars/webinars frequently offered by various student services. Your professor, more than anyone on this board, can help you.
Francophile1 Posted May 17, 2014 Author Posted May 17, 2014 Thanks! I guess so I will discuss it with him. I just find it kind of weird that we are thrown in Graduate school without any real guidance how exactly they want us to construct a research paper. I guess it is assumed we know how, but I find that even though I have written graduate papers for undergrad, at this level their requirements are way different.
