ht777 Posted June 20, 2014 Posted June 20, 2014 Topic Claim: The best test of an argument is its ability to convince someone with an opposing viewpoint. Reason: Only by being forced to defend an idea against the doubts and contrasting views of others does one really discover the value of that idea. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the claim and the reason on which that claim is based. My response: Strong argument is always supported everywhere, be it business firms, parliamentary house, etc. The reason for this is that the true values of an idea are known only when the idea is able to convince people with opposing viewpoint. Primarily, a strong argument gets to the roots of the idea, hence exposing its true value. For instance, a CEO of an automobile company discusses the various designs of the automobile with each member of the staff. Only that member`s design is selected who is able to satisfy each of its components (roots) in the market, ranging from customer choices, current trends, potential success in the market, etc. As a matter of fact, an argument which defeats the opposing arguments by getting into the roots gives the best value. Furthermore only the argument, which has something right about itself, is able to convince others with different viewpoint. Indeed, while defending the ideas against the doubts and contrasting views the right things of the argument comes out. Needless to say that, the argument which has the maximum number of right values is selected as the final outcome. A good example for this is passing of a particular bill in the parliament house. Thus, an argument only convinces people with opposing viewpoint if it has right and correct values. On the other hand, the members of the argument should all be equally knowledgeable to expose true values of an idea. Taking for example, an argument involving several construction workers and an architect and the topic is on blueprint of the building. Thus, we all know only the architects viewpoint is going to be the outcome of the discussion even if it is flawed. In a strong argument exposes the true value of the idea only when all the members involved in the discussion are sufficiently and equally knowledgeable about the idea of discussion.
