anthrosoul Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 I know I am a bit ahead of myself since I still have 2 years left to complete my undergraduate degree but I would like to be well informed (even if it is a bit early). I am completing my BA in anthropology at a UC and my dream is to go to Stanford to get my MA in anthropology (following the environmental anthropology track). I know that Stanford is a very difficult school to get into; however, I have not seen a comprable environmental anthropology MA program offered anywhere else in CA. Does anyone else on here know of a good environmental anthropology MA program in CA (I am potentially willing to relocate, but it would have to be a very good program with good opportunities for funding)? My ultimate goal is to, in some capacity, work in environmental conservation. I feel environmental anthropology will be the best way for me to prepare myself to work in that feild but I am also looking into other programs, namely the Energy and Resources MA offered at Berkeley. I am open to any and all suggestions. Please know that all feedback is deeply appreciated. Thanks
rbargiel Posted July 9, 2014 Posted July 9, 2014 Hi Anthrosoul, I'm a first year anthropology grad student specializing in environmental anthro. While I know virtually nothing about programs in California, here's a list of some of the schools I checked out/applied to: - The Ohio State University - University of Maine - University of Hawaii at Manoa - University of Georgia - University of Texas at San Antonio - Oregon State University - Washington State University - Colorado State University Ohio State is where I'll be attending, and they're very strong with human ecology and evolution from a biological perspective. Georgia is widely regarded as the best, but they have difficult admissions. UTSA is sort of a rising star. Maine has limited admissions and has an applied policy approach. As for Hawaii, Colorado, Washington, and Oregon, each of those have at least one or two faculty members who work on environmental anthropology. Colorado State is currently MA only. What subfield are you interested in? I assume sociocultural? Hope this is helpful.
Owl Woman Posted March 18, 2015 Posted March 18, 2015 San Diego State and Humboldt State both have a focus on environmental anthropology - not sure about funding opportunities though. Good luck on Stanford. The entire program (all sub-fields included) only accepts about 10 students per year, but it is always worth it to follow your dreams.
