Flux2 Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 So I'm debating on whether to ask LOR from my research advisor or the post doc who directly advises me for grad school. The post doc really likes me, knows me very well (knows my personalities, how much I'm willing to commit to research and all those miscellaneous stuff that can only be noticed via interaction everyday) so I'm pretty sure he can write a very competitive letter. But the problem is that he's a post doc and he's international so probably won't be able to write eloquently. My research advisor even if he consults with the post doc I'm not sure how strong the letter will be. There wasn't much interaction because I always discuss with the post doc. Shall I ask LOR from post doc? or research advisor? or both?
BeakerBreaker Posted June 30, 2014 Posted June 30, 2014 Is the research advisor a professor/PI/head of the lab? Be careful, because some schools actually require that all required (often 3) letters come from professors. I had a senior technician and a staff scientist write two additional letters for me, and had to ask another professor for one school who wanted all professors. What I'd do in your situation is ask both and submit all of them if possible.
bsharpe269 Posted July 1, 2014 Posted July 1, 2014 I would ask the Professor. It is common to interact with grad students or post docs more than your PI when you are in undergrad. You should still ask the PI for the letter. He can consult with the post doc if he wasnts more info. Honestly, not speaking to him is a good thing. It means you can work independently and without hand holding. If his letter says that then it will mean a lot.
