I'm (hopefully) moving to NC around this time next year. I'm looking for good MSW schools in NC. My only problem is the low GPA. My Social Work GPA is high but my overall GPA isn't. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? I'm really confused as to what to look for. Thanks!

Hi nicoleann,

Is your overall GPA below a 3.0?  Have you had any related volunteer or work experience since graduating?  Often times having a couple years of related work and/or volunteer experience can help bolster your application.  Lastly you may want to consider studying for and taking the GRE.  Many schools recommend an applicant to submit a GRE score if their overall GPA falls below a 3.0 or whatever is their low threshold.

I know that both NC State and UNCC have MSW programs that are pretty highly regarded. I am sure there are many more in the state that I am unaware of. Since the defintion of a low GPA really varies between people, giving us your major and overall GPA would be helpful in recommendations. Are you looking to move to a specific part of NC? I am in a different field but am pretty familiar with NC and know people who studied social work at various NC schools so I'm happy to answer any questions!

I'm starting the full-time program at UNC-Chapel Hill this Fall which is a pretty highly regarded program with a good alumni network. I was accepted with a 3.4 overall gpa. UNC does require the GRE... I scored quite high in the verbal but my quant was abysmal (around 35th percentile). That being said, I have about 3 years of related volunteer experience but no professional social work related experience. I also think I wrote a strong personal statement which helped counteract my not so great GRE score.

Besides the program at UNC, all of the following North Carolina schools have MSW programs: NC State, UNC-Wilmington, UNC-Charlotte, Western Carolina, East Carolina, and NC Central (probably others that I didn't list).

Let me know if you have any specific questions about the program at UNC... I'd be happy to help if I can!

How do you like the program so far? I am considering this program for fall of 2016 and am trying to learn more! The program seems to be highly competitive but more expensive, most likely due to it's prestige. Did you decide to go on the direct or administrative track?
