CheeseSandwich Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Grades and everything were to be in on August 15th and the commencement ceremony was on August 19th for the University of Oregon. I applied to graduate and I've been told by the office of the registrar that I had completed what I needed. But I've had some problems with U of O in the past that has really caused me problems so until my application says accepted I'm kind of freaking out. My adviser is not responding after 2 emails and another one sent today. I'm applying for jobs and everything but if they check, I still haven't gotten my diploma. Am I freaking out over nothing or is this a problem others have had?
TakeruK Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 I would wait a while longer and then check with the registrar's office (not your advisor). It might depend on the type of job, but many employers are used to hiring fresh graduates that have completed all degree requirements but do not officially have the degree conferred until later. For example, I started my PhD program in October but my degree was not conferred until November of that year. In addition, my current school only confer degrees once a year, in June, so if you just defended now and start a job in October, you would not actually have the degree in hand until June 2015. Most schools will confirm that the student has indeed completed all requirements if they are asked, I believe.
fuzzylogician Posted September 6, 2014 Posted September 6, 2014 Am I freaking out over nothing or is this a problem others have had? My PhD is not going to be officially conferred for a bit longer and it's caused me some trouble at my new job, though nothing I couldn't overcome. The person to address your questions about this to is not your advisor -- they probably know nothing about how this part of the bureaucracy works. You need to contact the registrar at your school to ask when you can expect to have the degree officially in hand. You may not get the diploma for a while longer (some schools only do that once, or just several times, a year), but often it will be reflected in your final transcript before then, or else the registrar can issue you an official letter attesting that you've been awarded the degree (and will receive the diploma in the next commencement ceremony, on date X).
