runner92 Posted September 29, 2014 Posted September 29, 2014 Hi everyone, This is my first post here and I would really like some advice. A bit of background about me: I graduated this year from a top liberal arts college with a BA in neuroscience and sociology. Unfortunately, I have a low GPA (3.05). I have spent the past few months studying for the GRE and figuring out what to do in the future. My GRE scores are V 160/Q 161/AW 4. I am currently taking a MOOC programming class which I enjoy a lot, and I am looking to switch into the field of computer science. I am thinking about applying to some master's programs in CS that don't require much prior experience with CS. My problem is that I have taken a couple of programming classes during the first few semesters of undergrad and didn't do well in them (grade of D in one and a C in the other). However, this had more to do with bad study habits and some mental health issues I had at the time rather than lack of interest in the subject. I have since matured as a person and as a student, and I don't want these poor grades to limit my future chances at grad school admissions. So my first question is, do you think admissions committees would even consider my application given the terrible grades I received in the programming classes I took as an undergrad? 2) If I successfully complete a couple of MOOC courses and mention that in my resume or personal statement, would that be enough to improve my chances of admission? Or do I need to take a bunch of CS/math classes at a local university first? 3) Is there anything else I can do to improve my overall application? (As far as an internship or job or research relating to CS?) Any advice is much appreciated!
