Hi all,

The following is my SOP for Masters in Renewable Energy. Kindly review it and give your comments.

                                     STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

It was once said, “Don’t ever let someone tell you that you can’t do something. Not even me. You got a dream, you got to protect it”.  Yes, I slept with a dream of pursuing Engineering when I passed class X.  There were thorns, which morphed and multi folded in all its possible forms to challenge my career pursuits. Indeed, I felt glad when I crisscrossed it with my academic excellence. When I felt like a fish in water on the day 1 of my under graduation, it was my affinity towards the subject coupled with the aspiration, made me a person, whom I am today.

One fine day during my schooling, I was actively lending my ears with the discussion pertaining to ‘Electrical Energy Conservation’. When there was a heated debate drilling down the topic, I gathered all my nerves to put down my thoughts. The thought process made me to climb a bit up and made me to do an extensive study on the same.  Though it made me to pen down my first white paper, it as well instilled my interests towards Electrical Engineering pursuits. My meritorious performance in the high school examinations secured me an admission in one of the top engineering colleges of my state.

I remember the poem ‘The Road not yet taken’, when I paved my engineering study towards Electrical and Electronics world, while my other friends took computer science as their major. Just a couple of weeks after my 12th class exams, I happened to see Dr.Abdul Kalam’s speech in United Nations Assembly about ‘Energy Independence’. An excerpt of it was about a plant named ‘Jatropha’, which was conceptualized as a source of ‘Bio Diesel’, by waving the green flag to the road for energy independence. But, it was then I realized that even my career road to ‘Energy’ was wide opened.

Though my engineering studies started with ‘Ohms Law’, in parallel with ‘programming concepts’, I had a rock solid foundation on gripping my analytical skills, which was an ideal foundation for an engineer. The core subjects included were Electrical Machines, Power Systems, Circuit Theory, Electromagnetic Theory, Power System Analysis, High Voltage Engineering, Power Electronics, Control Systems, and Power Plant Engineering. . The industrial visits to Neyveli Lignite Corporation Ltd, Neyveli, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam and Ennore Thermal Power Station, Ennore helped me to visualize the Power Plant Operations that I pursued in the engineering curriculum during my under graduation. The in-plant training at Neyveli Lignite Corporation Ltd, Neyveli and Integral Coach Factory, Perambur showed me the real time experience.

With a foresight to conserve energy and preserve environment, I started working on a white paper on “Solar powered stirling engine for self-generating electricity”.  My white paper found its place in larger screens in various colleges, before finding a massive audience in the International conference on Recent Advancements in Electrical, Electronics and Control Engineering (ICONRAEeCE) organized by Mepco Schlenk Engineering College, Sivakasi in Dec,2011 sponsored by IEEE Madras Section and Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of NEVEDA, LAS VEGAS, USA. The white paper was catalogued and published in IEEE Digital Xplore (Digital Object Identifier: 10.1109/ICONRAEeCE.2011.6129723, Print ISBN: 978-1-4577-2146-5). The paper deals with generating electricity from a heat engine by cyclic compression and expansion of air. Solar energy is concentrated using solar concentrators and given as the source of heat for Stirling engines. Now, mechanical work (motoring action) is obtained from the Stirling engine due to the compression and expansion of air in the engine. This solar powered Stirling engine is coupled with a generator to produce power.  It has the ability to utilize effectively any burnable fuel, such as wood, rice husk, straw, agricultural waste and other readily available and cheap combustibles. This compatibility with alternative and renewable energy sources has become increasingly significant as the price of conventional fuel rises. It is more efficient and safer than a comparable steam engine. This method of power production has no pollution, less noise. Stirling engines are also being looked by NASA for the use in space exploration. My Engineering saga of 4 years bagged me a Merit Scholarship award, by securing 45th University rank among all the colleges affiliated to *** University during my under graduation with a CGPA of 8.72. My stint in **** company gave me the initial taste of professionalism coupled with the understanding of the emerging business needs. My work was aligned in line with an ‘Energy Sector’ customer, which gave several insights about the energy industry.

The proliferation of the idea of the ‘Energy Conservation’ has come to the lime light, by planting the seed of importance for protecting the environment. I have discovered my interest towards the innovations in solar energy. I strongly believe, pursuing the graduation in solar energy course in XXX university/college, will definitely help me in molding myself as ‘Nature’s Citizen’. Moreover, I have my dreams of contributing to the nature by accomplishing my studies in a much productive way to conserve the energy, but indeed nature. I believe XXX university/college has its own glory of creating the greener pastures for the nature conscientious students of my sort.

With this, I request the management and admission department of XXX university/college to consider my application with the available financial aids that would open the doors for my dream and passion to start contributing to the nature, by marveling with the recent technological advancement in the field.

I cordially extend my thanks for providing time to read my statement of purpose and awaiting the correspondence from your side for an intellectual association with XXX University/College in my field of interest.
