Alack, no it's all quiet on all fronts unfortunately... And weirdly enough checking in here or my email does not change it...

I contacted the administrative offices of Emory (comp lit), Brown (comp lit), Stanford (MTL), and Berkeley (rhetoric) to see if any of them conducted interviews. The answer was "no" everywhere except Emory (Brown might do phone skype but likely won't). So I don't think we will be hearing anything until ~February 3 at least.

Keep on keeping on...

Nothing from the two comp lit departments to which I applied.

I was seriously out of shape right after submitting applications all the way up to a few weeks ago---the first week in January. Not sure what did the trick but I'm managing much better now. If we made it this far, we can wait a few more weeks. :)

I was about to raise the same question: no news from comp lit people?

My inbox has been quiet as a stone.

Edit: Although it's unlikely that I'll get into Berkeley, the fact that they usually send out acceptances during the last week of January still puts me on edge.....

I'm guessing the process takes especially long for interdisciplinary programs because the applications much be passed around and advocated for by POIs who are tied to their own national literatures/humanities/anything ending in "studies" departments. The Slavic studies professor I talked to at Brown a while back made it seem like a POI may have some pull in saying "no" but admittance is ultimately decided by the department. So depending on how many faculty members you mentioned in your statement of purpose, your statement will need to be passed between 2-3 professors who have responsibilities outside of the Comp Lit department, then deliberated by a committee of people who may or may not end up working closely with you, with expertise that may or may not line up with your focuses. Maybe it is different at other institutions, but MTL at Stanford and Comp Lit at Brown have very few faculty members devoted to departmental administration and rely mainly on faculty from English, national literatures, philosophy, etc, to advise.

Keeping that in mind, it still totally sucks. I feel like every day I get a little more insane.

All of my programs have admitted at different dates every year. Sometimes super early, sometimes super late, sometimes rolling admissions, sometimes not. This makes for heightened anxiety.

I've been on the wine and all things sweet diet, which unfortunately needs to come to a close because otherwise I will need a new wardrobe.

I've gone the opposite direction and am running on ~1000-1400 calories per day, no carbs, somewhat obsessive exercise...yet little-to-no weight loss from all the stress (or something).

Same here, it's all chocolate and wine and then more chocolate and wine.

I've been eating a lot of Ballerina Swedish cookies (the ones with hazelnut and cocoa filling that you used to be able to get at Ikea) and drinking red wine on the nightly. It's getting scary, I think I'm gaining weight!

Hi Nahis,

So glad to see you here! I am also going to apply this year for Comp. Lit. and I am living in LA now, doing a master program in English.

I am also Chinese, so if you want to ask questions or visit, def. pm me. Are you living in the US now or living in China? It is very HARD for international students in literature, believe me. I applied fall 2013, and didn't get in anywhere. In order to be a qualified candidate, I am doing a MA in English right now. My advice for you, if you are still in China, work on your English and get super high GRE scores in the V part. I see that you already have high scores,so that is a relief. Sometimes funding and fellowships really depends on how good your English is. In your case I will say, you have def. great records. If I were you, I would work on my oral English, and present a GREAT writing sample. That is the most important after all.

Good Luck and maybe we can study together.

Hi there, I'm an international applicant applying for doctoral programs of CompLit. I would like to know other CompLit applicants and people who are already attending a CompLit program here. :) Would be grateful for any suggestions and information about CompLit programs!

Here are some things about me:

Areas of interest: narrative forms, history of the novel, aesthetics, interaction between art criticism and literary criticism / literature and arts. I'm interested in early China, 19c France and Edo Japan.

Languages: I'm a native speaker of Chinese, know French and Japanese, and have basic knowledge of classical Latin, classical Greek, German and Sanskrit.

Applying to: Brown, UMich, UChicago, Washington in St. Louis, UCR, UCSC, USC, Indiana, PennState, Rutgers and maybe UCSB. (still deciding on schools, so REALLY need some advice...)

GPA 3.55 (undergraduate) , V163 Q163 AW4.0, TOEFL 113. Have not attended any conferences nor published any papers (probably the biggest weakness in my application package?). I'm currently translating a book on still lifes in literature and arts into Chinese, also trying to sign up for a conference held in Dec. (don't think it will help much, though...)

I was wondering if any one knew the funding of the UC schools, I've seen posts warning not to apply to universities of the UC system because they have poor funding. Well funding is quite important for me so I'm a bit worried, I would appreciate it if there are any suggestions on this.

Good luck to all the applicants here!

Also, after rereading your post, I want to say that you should also consider East Asian Studies maybe.

I don't know Japanese nor Korean, otherwise I would apply to EAS. I have the feeling that CL is sometimes more English based. Living in California is def. comfortable because of the GREAT weather, but also things are very expensive and you NEED a car. I visited New York this winter break, and I think I will mostly apply for NYC, simply because they have great subways. I used to live in Beijing for 5 years, so I love the subway. Another thing to put into consideration is to study the personality of the people from the place you want to apply. I have the feeling that I am more likely to have an east coast character. So my point is, while thinking about schools, it is also good to do research on the cities. As a Chinese international student, I know how hard financial burden could be, especially if you are not a native speaker, fellowships and jobs can be hard to get.
