Parents of child I work with--appropriate LOR?

I work with children/teens who have developmental/intellectual disabilities (through an actual company) and I have been working with one particular girl for over a year now. I have become very close with her and her entire family. Would it be appropriate for me to ask the parents for a LOR since they are essentially my "employers"? Or would this be too inappropriate and be a death sentence for my applications? I just feel like they know me and my work ethic better than the actual company, since I never have to interact much with the company.

 

I should add that I am applying to Master's programs in counseling
