Dr. X is awesome blah blah blah. Her project on blah blah blah blah is blah blah. Dr. X would be an ideal mentor for me blah blah blah. In conclusion, working with Dr. Y would be a dream come true.

I checked my statement of purpose for a university because I wanted to see something and noticed the mistake. Ten days after I submitted my application. Dr. Y is from another university as well.

I contacted the graduate admissions registrar and she said that it was too late to upload a revised edition. I just wanted to let it out. I am miserable now.

How much will it hamper my chances?

I am sorry to hear that.

From what I know, some schools regard even an error in punctuation as a sign that you are not ready for grad school

while others accepted applicants who wrote another university's name in the SOP.

I think it really depends.

Good luck

Thank you for your reply. I pretty much have accepted that I blew my chance with that school.

If the rest of your application package is stellar and the department really wants you, this won't destroy your chances. If the admissions committee is vacillating between admitting you or not, it could act as the tipping point.

You just can't know how it's going to pan out. Either way, it's just not useful to you to obsess over it--although it's SO difficult not to! You should treat yourself to something nice, and try not to focus on this error. If you have other applications to submit, go through your SOPs with a fine-tooth comb.

Good luck!

Thank you so much for your reply! :) I hope it doesn't destroy my chances. I have submitted all my applications and went through the rest of my already submitted SOPs and all of them were great. Oh well.
