wuglife427 Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 People who are applying/have applied to Chicago: I'm kind of confused about something on the financial data page, and I'm stupid and didn't realize I had a question until it was too late to email the department and expect a response in time (app is due Monday). Here are the instructions under "Sources of Funding": If you are not applying for aid, or if you are also applying to a Master's program and financial assistance cannot be offered by the University, describe how you would meet the financial costs of your graduate studies during your first academic year. If you are applying to a PhD program, you may list university support as a source of funding below. You should list separately any applicable resources that you expect to be available to you from: personal funds (savings, trust funds, dividends); support from spouse's earnings; assistance from family or friends; grants from government agencies, foundations or employers; earnings from summer and part-time employment; and loans. Since I'm applying to a PhD program, does that mean I only write "University support," or should I also include personal funds? I have some money, but not enough to cover my first year--and like most people, I wouldn't attend unless I got funding, so I kind of feel like my personal funds aren't relevant. I just want to see what you guys think, since funding is not something to mess around with. Thanks!
uselesstheory Posted December 13, 2014 Posted December 13, 2014 (edited) I honestly filled in nothing - I can only afford a PhD program if I'm funded by Chicago/the program, and I wasn't going to write "I could try to find a minimum wage job if things get rough" or "my parents probably would throw 20 bucks at me if I were about to lose my apartment"...I thought that section was weird. I was doubting my decision to not write anything, though. I'd say ask the department if you're confused and think it's important, because I'm not sure if my approach was correct. Edit: I did list university support, though. So I basically did what your hunch is to do. Edited December 13, 2014 by uselesstheory
aojfifjoaisjaiosdj Posted December 19, 2014 Posted December 19, 2014 Sorry if this is late. I just said University support and put ? for the funding next to it. Should be ok.
