mjaydixon Posted December 31, 2014 Posted December 31, 2014 I'm applying to MPA programs, and several of my recommenders have had a huge influence on my career path and my interest in the field. Currently my SOP mentions them by name, for example: "I emulate the leadership style of my mentor, Jane Doe, by ...." Is this a breach of decorum? I feel it helps personalize the essay, but the MPA is less concerned with research so there's certainly no need for name-dropping in terms of relevant publications or prestige in the field. In short, should I keep the references by name or remove them from my SOP?
bsharpe269 Posted December 31, 2014 Posted December 31, 2014 This is just my opinion which should be taken with a grain of salt since I don't know your specific field at all... I agree that it helps personalize the essay and connect your specific path to your career with the letters that will come with your application. I would give some details on how they have influenced you, not just state that you look up to them (which I think you were planning on with the "..." above, but just making sure).
