n8poe1992 Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 (edited) Hello all, I have a BA in psychology and philosophy, and am currently getting a master's degree in statistics. I did research as an undergraduate student in the field of categorization, focusing on similarity and analogy, and would like to pursue a PhD in cognitive psychology (or cognitive science) specializing in that area of category formation from a computational standpoint, particularly from a statistical/probabilistic framework. I am curious as to what universities might have programs/departments/research centers of interest to me (or that you think would), so any information would be most appreciated. I am not exactly sure when I will be applying for doctoral programs, but it will be after I finish this program, so post 2016. Thanks Edited February 10, 2015 by n8powe1992 n8poe1992 1
stayandsea Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 Hey - so consider Dr. Gupta for his cognitive work on categorization (there is a big emphasis on language across disciplines at Iowa, very exciting!) and computational modeling. For the statistics bit, I can personally recommend Fordham, UNC (depends on what you're into though) and UCLA. Good luck!
cogsci1 Posted February 10, 2015 Posted February 10, 2015 Oh wow this is almost exactly what I did and hope to be doing, both majors and statistics, except I did statistics in undergraduate, no masters. I'm not sure what tier you're looking at, but the best I could list off the top of my head are: Berkeley, Stanford, UCSD, UCLA, WUSTL, MIT, Brown, NYU, Michigan. They all have different focuses and interests, but that's where I'd start
n8poe1992 Posted February 10, 2015 Author Posted February 10, 2015 It's great to see someone else who is doing the same thing. Yeah I am doing a masters to not only learn some more advanced statistical techniques (especially in modeling) but also to hopefully make up for my undergraduate GPA (which wasn't terrible; 3.4 overall after my first 3 semesters as a chemistry major went...not so well). I am just not entirely sure what tier school I should aim for I guess; I obviously would love to go to all of those schools that were just mentioned (NYU, WUSTL, and Berkeley being personal dreams of mine).
