pd010 Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 Hey guys. I'm a bit lost on how to improve my scores for a retake. I took the test a few days ago and sort of faltered in the second half as I got flustered not knowing how to quickly address the quant questions and lost time. I got a score - Q 159 / V 157 with mostly quant focus during study. I intend to apply to either Comp Sci or Data Science programs and I know my quant score is pretty much at the average and should be higher for those type of programs. I've already gone through... 1) Manhattan Prep guides and 5 tests 2) All of the official guides and tests 3) The majority of Math questions on Magoosh Outside of the actual test, most of the issues I have is with timing and making careless mistakes. For an application, I really just have till right after the 21 day window to take the test again. Not sure how to improve my quant score though from now till then. Would it really help to revisit the same questions I've gone over and fully understand the ones I might have gotten wrong? I did review them several times over before taking the actual test so not sure really how I can improve.
eeee1923 Posted February 16, 2015 Posted February 16, 2015 You might want to use the ETS PowerPrep II software under real test conditions (it's a free piece of software). This would help improve any of the anxiety that you may be having about taking the test.
pd010 Posted February 17, 2015 Author Posted February 17, 2015 Yeah, I actually went through that as well. I'm still trying to decide if I want to commit to studying again for it but seems like the most important thing I can do is review as much as I can the questions I got wrong / took a long time and figure out why that was the case. I thought I did already, though. I think I'm just pretty anxious with this sort of testing - not sure if I can get over the anxiety issues but we'll figure out in a day or two what I'm going to do.
eeee1923 Posted February 17, 2015 Posted February 17, 2015 If you take it once or twice a week (something I happened to do) in the weeks leading up to the exam it may help you get the process down pat. A higher verbal score would be helpful but focus on getting the Quant up to ~ 165 or more. I totally get the anxiety thing but if the other parts of your application are strong, I wouldn't sweat it too much. Overall: take the quant section multiple times (you may not have to take whole exams) from the different sources you had mentioned. Since you're kind of pressed for time this may be your best bet.
