occidorient Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 I got an email from UCSD IRPS asking me to check the message center on my online application, where I discovered I have been "nominated for admission" and that an "official admissions notification" will be sent by the UC graduate division in the coming days. I'm not sure how to feel..Does this mean I am admitted? Or is there still a chance that nomination could be overturned? Not sure if I can be celebrating admission yet or still be waiting! Has anyone else applied to UCSD and received a similar email? Or do other schools have a process such as this? What has everyone's experience been with this kind of "nomination" notification?
outofspace Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 I got the same e-mail a couple of hours ago. I'm not 100% sure what to make of being "nominated for admission" either, but I have seen posts on here recently about similar procedures at other schools if you want to look around. I should probably do that myself but just haven't had time this morning.
Randomgal Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 Hi there, I got "recommended/nominated" for admission two weeks ago, and I got the official acceptance a week ago. So, it means your in! Congrats! All you have to do now is wait for the graduate division to approve the nomination. Hope this helps!
occidorient Posted February 26, 2015 Author Posted February 26, 2015 Thanks outofspace, randomgal for the insight. I'm really excited by the idea of being "in" somewhere (this is the first kind of admissions notification I've received from the schools to which I've applied), and from what I've seen from other posters such nomination tends to imply admission. Still, the lack of full clarity is tense!
Randomgal Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 I forgot to mention that my admission was for UCSD, hope this eases your tension occidorient!
eeee1923 Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 "Nominated" means that the program has accepted you and they're waiting for the bureaucratic clearance with the graduate school, usually you should get "in" with no problem unless the grad school somehow felt you didn't meet the minimum admission requirements. So congrats - you can breathe a little easier.
botbot22 Posted February 26, 2015 Posted February 26, 2015 (edited) I got my nomination as well, but have a GPA that is just a hair below the stated minimum requirement (which is officially 3.0, according to the site). Looks like I get to sweat it out another week until its official, but most likely I (and you guys, as well) am just being paranoid. Edited February 26, 2015 by botbot22
Guvutnick Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 I just received my official acceptance email, so you all should check your emails when you get the chance. No word about funding; do those decisions come at a later date?
Kosmosis707 Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 I just received my official acceptance email, so you all should check your emails when you get the chance. No word about funding; do those decisions come at a later date? I believe one of my letters stated that funding decisions would come some time this month. I was an early admit and have been anxiously awaiting the funding news.
ghkim Posted March 5, 2015 Posted March 5, 2015 I was early admit. I received the exact same email on Jan 30th and after about 3 weeks I got official admission letter from Graduate Admission Committee. And they said the information on funding will be released in March.
frozenx207 Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 I got the nomination on Feb 25 but I still haven't received an official acceptance. Is anyone else still waiting?
Randomgal Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 I got the nomination on Feb 25 but I still haven't received an official acceptance. Is anyone else still waiting? I got my nomination on February 12 and I got the official acceptance email on the February 18th. Hopefully, you'll get the official acceptance soon!
frozenx207 Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 I'm so anxious about it. It's not unheard of to be rejected after an admissions nomination right?
Kosmosis707 Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 I'm so anxious about it. It's not unheard of to be rejected after an admissions nomination right? It's probably VERY rare. As long as you didn't fib on your application and you meet the graduate school minimum qualifications, you're solid.

Kosmosis707 Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 Nice! Congrats! I'll likely see you down there! frozenx207 1
botbot22 Posted March 10, 2015 Posted March 10, 2015 I'm so anxious about it. It's not unheard of to be rejected after an admissions nomination right? Still waiting. Had an email requesting a transcript, sent it (via internets), hasn't been opened yet. Stay strong.
frozenx207 Posted March 12, 2015 Posted March 12, 2015 Still waiting. Had an email requesting a transcript, sent it (via internets), hasn't been opened yet. Stay strong. >.< Thank you. Good luck to us both.
frozenx207 Posted March 13, 2015 Posted March 13, 2015 I just got an email from the Director of Enrollment about a fellowship offer which I'm extremely happy about. However, I actually haven't gotten an official letter of acceptance yet. I am so happy right now and hoping that this isn't a mistake. I hope to see you all down there
blooscorn Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 Has anyone heard anything about TA/RA positions yet?
botbot22 Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 I just got an email from the Director of Enrollment about a fellowship offer which I'm extremely happy about. However, I actually haven't gotten an official letter of acceptance yet. I am so happy right now and hoping that this isn't a mistake. I hope to see you all down there I emailed them Friday, and ended up getting my letter at around 11pm last night. To be honest though I would of rather received a fellowship email than the actual acceptance email. Congrats!
botbot22 Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 Has anyone heard anything about TA/RA positions yet? Me, you, and Kosmosis707 all seem to be working between a DC school (specifically SIS I think) and IRPS. Are you guys at all worried about passing up the brand recognition, higher ranking, and geographic location SIS offers? It seems to be a pretty easy decision for you guys but I'm really struggling between the two.
Guvutnick Posted March 15, 2015 Posted March 15, 2015 I'm also concerned about the price. I was lucky enough to receive a fellowship, but still looking at what, 60k+ over two years? I lived for the last few years, and the prospect of that much debt on top of my undergrad debt is making me consider going back out there.
blooscorn Posted March 16, 2015 Posted March 16, 2015 Cost is certainly a consideration for me. I've heard anecdotally that IRPS does well supplying their applicants with TA/RA positions, and that their career services are on point. The bit of funding they gave me certainly sweetens the pot, and since I'm considering an academic career in the future in political science, the UCSD brand name I believe will be helpful. While not associated, their PhD program is a top ten, and at IRPS I can work with some of those faculty. I think this gives me more flexibility, especially pursuing an academic track if I so decide in the future. For American, the greatest draw and the reason I applied there and not to GW Elliott or Georgetown, is their dual degree program with Korea University... I'm not sure I can easily turn this down. I'm also trying to get some funding from JSIS at the University of Washington. I applied to a pair of FLAS fellowships and was waitlisted through both. They have a fantastic Korean studies program, and I was actually considering that my first choice before the funding seemed to dry up in front of my eyes...
