idmaster2000 Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 I am looking at beginning a PhD in English in a year or two, and I have three kids, so my income requirements from a program are pretty steep. Does anyone know of a website that shows the teaching stipends, in general or in English, for all universities? Or how much does your school pay English TA's? Thanks
Minnesotan Posted July 1, 2006 Posted July 1, 2006 I know at my undergrad institution one was much better off working as a writing gta than as an English gta. It was all the same department here, but the writing instructors were in much higher demand, what with all the Freshman Comp. sections that needed covering. Thus the people who apply for the writing GTAs get a much nicer offer when the acceptance letters go out. It may be different elsewhere, but college writing/freshman comp. classes are normally what keep smaller English departments afloat.
DespSeekPhd Posted July 5, 2006 Posted July 5, 2006 No, there isn't one website that sums it all up - you have to look at each individually. Usually the financial aid section for the department website will list it, otherwise you will need to contact them to find out. As a grad student with 2 kids, it would have been absolutely impossible for me to stay afloat on grad school money if it wasn't for the additional salary from my husband. Even at that, the financial aid was necessary.
