I wonder if I should reply to the offer email right away with a thank-you email and explain that I'll reply with my decision later on (before the deadline). Or should I just wait until I make the decision?

I am still waiting for other schools and probably have to wait until later March before I can decide whether or not to accept.

Thanks.

To all my offers, I've sent a brief email saying thank you for the offer and that I would be in touch as soon as possible with a decision.

Thanks for your suggestion.

I also wrote a brief thank you email soon after receiving the offer and asked whatever clarification questions necessary. So, I would wait a while, 3-5 days maybe, before writing a thank you note since you might not have questions until a few days later. But I think it is also fine if you do not respond until you have a decision.

I responded to my acceptance with a thank you email and that I would respond in regards to the offer as soon as possible in the upcoming weeks. =)

I'm also facing something similar.

Good to know that I wasn't the only one.

I wrote a thank you and that I would consider it as well as asked a few questions about the program / offer. If you think it would be awkward to just say "Thanks for the offer, I'll let you know" then think of some pertinent questions to give your email more substance.
