Where to go for Roman art?

Hi all, I'm just starting this crazy PhD process. All over the forum I keep seeing program rankings with the caveat: ranking depends entirely on your field of specialization. Now I want to bite. Where would you suggest I go if I want to study Roman Art and Archaeology, particularly the art of the provinces? Are straight-up art history programs stronger than an interdisciplinary program?

 

I would really value your input and your thoughts on the best program.

I don't know a lot about your field, but I've heard good things about Francesco de Angelis at Columbia - and that program strongly encourages interdisciplinary study, so you could get the best of both worlds. There's also Christopher Hallett at Berkeley and C. Brian Rose at U Penn. If you're interested in interdisciplinary work, I'd also research which programs allow/want you to take classes in other departments (and, where applicable, examine the strength of specialists in the relevant outside departments), and which programs have specialists in related Art History fields that you may be interested in working with.

You want to go somewhere that is strong in classics, art history and archaeology. If I were studying Roman art I would set my sights on either Berkeley or the Joukowsky Institute at Brown. I have met a few people from Joukowsky and they've all had extremely impressive research and CVs. It bills itself as more of an "archeology" program, but their graduates get hired by art history and classics departments as well.

@Joan I was an undergraduate Classical Languages major, so my Latin's pretty strong.
