Question for those who did not get housing: What were your preferences?

I had almost every option on my list, cheaper things ranked higher. Like two of them were too expensive to bother ranking, though.

I can't get over how much more difficult this is going to make my life. I don't understand how they expect anyone from outside the region to get there who doesn't have tons of time and thousands of dollars waiting around to dump into this stupid chore.

Look for a PM from me.

Question for those who did not get housing: What were your preferences?

@talkcherty2me My department told us when we should request housing in order to make it for our department's TA training. It's the weekend my contract at work ends so I'll be hustling. Kinda cool how it all flows together.

I had Warehouse Efficiency (1), Ashdown Efficiency (2), and Edgerton 1-bedroom (3). Considering last year had almost a 100% success rate for incoming students getting graduate housing, this is kind of surprising. I know that Sidney-Pacific isn't taking students in the fall, but I figured that wouldn't impact us too much. I put the same choices for second-round allocation, but I'm not expecting anything. This is pretty frustrating; I guess it's time to begin the apartment hunting.

I heard from a friend (who asked the housing office) that after the first round, all spots are filled. And that the spots for the second round are basically from if people drop out from housing who got a spot during the first round (if that makes sense).

I am really surprised at how many incoming first years did not get housing during the first round. I thought first years were guaranteed on-campus housing.

I'm not surprised, the building under construction that's causing this mess was the biggest residence by a pretty large margin. It's a shame that 11 billion dollar endowment can't be used to somehow mitigate this.

For anyone who got housing or is just generally knowledgable, when do we get move in assignments (like date/room number)?

In the email I got confirming my assignment, it said "The Housing Office will email you your room number and move-in date by July 8, 2015."

Just hopping into this thread to say hi! I was an MIT undergrad but 1) had a ton of grad school friends, 2) have lived in 4 of the graduate dorms (sublets, summers, etc.), 3) know the apartment scene around the area, and 4) love Boston! I can't answer questions about PhD programs specifically, but if you guys have questions about MIT and Boston in general I'd love to help.

(And if any of y'all are an incoming econ PhD or Sloanie, welcome to my former departments!)
