goahead Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 Just now I received my I20 only to see the wrong DOB mentioned in that. My DOB is 2 June 1983 but mistakenly I entered 02-06-1983 (m/d/year) in my application..we have different system of writing birth dates. My mistake!! However, before preparing my I20, admissions office emailed me asking my correct DOB and I mailed them all details correctly. But still my dob is incorrect in I20 and worst part I paid around $50 to get it fast. What should I do now? Will they issue a new I20 or the current copy will work? I really do not want to pay another 50 bucks.
cs_phd Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 I think it needs to be rectified. DOB is an important field.
TakeruK Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 You definitely need to get that fixed. I also make D-M-Y and M-D-Y mixup all the time too!! (funny thing though--my advisor has to sign a form for the Canadian government for a fellowship I have and we use D-M-Y for official forms in Canada so they often make the same mistake!) My DS-2019 (J-1 equivalent of I-20) form had my middle name spelled wrong. I just asked them to fix it and they mailed another one right away. You will probably have to do the same thing. However, unless you need to start your visa application right away, I would not pay to get it rushed again!!
goahead Posted April 2, 2015 Author Posted April 2, 2015 Thanks TakeruK! I will ask my school to send the new I20 with correct DOB. I need one more suggestion regarding appearance of name in the passport and Visa. My passport: First/Given name: Amit Kumar Surname: Name in I-20: First/given name: Amit Family name/surname: Kumar Will it create any problem during Visa interview/port of entry or should I ask my school to change my name details also? Passport officials made some mistake while entering my details.
TakeruK Posted April 2, 2015 Posted April 2, 2015 For that name issue, I would contact the school and let them know what your passport says. I'm not sure if it will be a problem? Note that you will have to use your passport and your I-20 for ID purposes in the US (and every time you re-enter the US) so ideally, you might want to consider getting your passport corrected (if it's possible).
cs_phd Posted April 3, 2015 Posted April 3, 2015 contact the school. you need to change the name on i-20. i know a friend who had similar problem (no surname in passport). he rectified the passport once he arrived in us.
fancybrandy Posted July 11, 2015 Posted July 11, 2015 Hi, My date of birth is printed wrong in the I-20. My visa interview is in 2 days and I cannot reschedule it. I have sent the university a mail regarding this but they haven't replied to it yet. What should I do?
fuzzylogician Posted July 11, 2015 Posted July 11, 2015 It's the weekend. Call your school's ISO first thing (their) Monday morning. Ask for their advice on what to do. I think you have to have this mistake corrected before you can have your visa issued, and if that's so then you want to try and move the date of your interview instead of going, having a problem, and having to reschedule (which I think means you'd have to pay the fees again). However, I am not an expert, so check with someone who is.
