Hi All,

So, I was just informed I've been waitlisted to my first choice program for this coming fall.

I'm trying not to get upset about it as I know it wasn't a complete rejection, and because I've been accepted to another highly ranked program .

However, I was wondering if any of you have had any positive experiences after being waitlisted. I could really use a few positive and uplifting stories/advice.

Hi there,

I was in your position about 3 weeks ago when I received an email informing me I was waitlisted and if I had any questions to contact the program director.  I emailed the program director reinforcing my desire to attend the school and asked if she had any suggestions which would help to increase the probability of my acceptance.  While I have various years of practice my research is limited she asked if I would be willing to take a research course over the summer and I told her.... absolutely!  She ran this past the admissions committee and the next thing I knew 2 weeks ago I was attending the formal meet and greet for the accepted students and as of yesterday formally submitted my acceptance letter.  Hang in there, anything is still possible at this time and worse case scenario, you still have options.  Best of luck to you.

Hello Val006,

I am also on the wait list for NYU. When you wrote the letter to the program director, how were you able to express it? Also how did you find the program director's email? I'm a little scared.

I can't remember exactly how I phrased it but I knew I needed to let her know that I was still very interested.  I defined the school as being my top choice, explained why I thought it was the perfect fit and asked for recommendations of anything I could do to increase my probability of getting in.  I think it demonstrated that I was committed and willing to do what it takes.  It was honestly well received from the program director which is why I think I was given the opportunity.... sometimes the squeaky wheel does get the oil but I think its about finding a balance of being humble, respectful, assertive and demonstrating your abilities.  Go for the gusto!

I emailed the school and this was their response...it sounds positive to me. So I pray it works. I sent an email to admissions starting with a thank you for considering me, told them it is still my dream school, discussed my updates and how I won't give up, and told them how I fit in the school and pointed out great qualities I admire in the mission statement.

"I just spoke with Ms. Sheryl Goldfarb, Director of Admissions here at the Silver School of Social Work. She asked that I relay to you that the Admissions Committee needs more time in which to render a decision on your application. This is neither an acceptance nor rejection. I have shared with her your email  where you update us on your experience as well as your committment, strong desire and motivation to attend our school. I will attach your additional statement to your application."

It definately sounds like a promising response. I think it was a good call that you initiated the interaction and from here either way at least you know that you have done everything you can at this time.  I am routing for you!

Hi ther

Hey val!

Thank you for the encouraging story!! I am holding out hope. I also replied to my waitlist email, letting the committee know that they remained my first choice graduate program, and after reconsidering I would be willing to be part of one of their city/social work collaboration programs. I recieved an email back thanking me for my email...so I guess we'll see.

Thankfully I read another grad cafe thread where people were encouraged to reply to being wait listed otherwise I wouldn't have...this site is full of wonderful information!!

I was waitlisted by UMich for the Advanced Standing MSW program. I applied 12/18, and was waitlisted in February.

I contacted the school and requested an interview for early March. I made a pretty decent portfolio to bring to the interview outlining my skills and work experience.

Less than three weeks later, I was offered official admission for the program I wanted.

Request an interview if you can! I think it really made the difference in my case.

Good luck to you either way!!
