vityaz Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 I just received the last of my grades my MA program and was wondering what a "good" average would be, i.e. what would PhD programs expect from an applicant with an MA? I understand that the other parts of an application are more important, but am just curious. If it matters I'm in Canada.
eeee1923 Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 Usually at the Master's level a 3.7 - 4.0 (out of 4.0) is the typical "good" average in terms of GPA (so A/A-/B+ range).
bsharpe269 Posted May 8, 2015 Posted May 8, 2015 I would say anything above a 3.5 is good and the 3.0-3.5 range is acceptable but not good. I think that once you get above the 3.5 mark, PhD programs will be satisfied with your grades and more interested in your research.

ashiepoo72 Posted July 15, 2015 Posted July 15, 2015 Obviously it depends on the rest of your application package--extensive research and/or publishing can offset lowish grades, for example. Most programs will expect your MA grades to be as close to 4.0 as possible. An A-/A average is the ideal, especially because you're only taking classes in your discipline, unlike in undergrad when overall GPA is less important (though not unimportant) compared to major GPA. You should get at least a 3.7, in my opinion, but above a 3.8 is best.
